1st, 2nd and 5th Hour October 19, 2009

The objective of this reading week for you is to develop the skill of deduction: using information you have in order to bridge the gap between what you know and what you need to know.  No one can teach you all of the information in the world, but you can learn the skills necessary to approach all information.

Today you were assigned a mini-sheet with three excerpts from stories we’ve read in class or have yet to read.  In developing the skills of analysis, synthesis and deduction, you are asked to work independently to find the definitions of the bolded and underlined words on the sheet.

Use the following to help you deduce the meanings of the words: context clues, the general mood of the piece, prefixes, suffixes, root words, and past interactions with the words or words similar to the ones on the sheet.

You will have an in-class formative assessment in the form of an essay response this Thursday in class.  You will be given a story you have not read before, read it, comprehend it, and answer comprehension questions connected to the story.
